Best biking roads in Europeposted by Fraser on April, 13, 2015 in Bike Wear Direct
There are a number of factors that make a road great for biking. An excelling biking road should be full of twists and turns, so you can get your knee down and your heart racing! Plus, it should have a smooth surface, good visibility, and in an epic landscape.
It needs to give you that thrill and a real sense of adventure. All of these and you’ve hit the jackpot! Here are a few biking roads that we think fill the criteria:
Considered to be one of the top motorbike roads in Europe, the Transfagarasan Highway is at least the most spectacular road in Romania. Built as a strategic military route, the 90 km of twists and turns run north to south across the tallest sections of the Southern Carpathians.
Stelvio Pass, Italy
With 48 hairpin turns on the northern side, and 12 on the southern side, the Stelvio Pass, located in Italy, takes you through incredible stretches of Alpine scenery, and countless stunning miles of vast and sweeping roads, before arriving at the foot of the pass. Built for riding, at 2,757m, this run is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps.
Trollstigen is an extremely motorbike-friendly mountain road in Rauma, Norway. It has a steep incline of 9% and eleven hairpin bends up a sharp mountain side. Opened on July 31, 1936, after 8 years of construction, the road up is narrow and although it has been widened in recent years, vehicles over 12.4 metres long are prohibited from driving the road.
Furka Pass, Switzerland
The Furka Pass is a high mountain pass in the Swiss Alps. The base tunnel opened in 1982 and the Furka Pass was used as a site in the James Bond film Goldfinger. The road can be a little bit narrow in parts, but it offers out of this world views onto the surrounding glaciers.
Shipka Pass, Bulgaria
Shipka Pass is a beautiful scenic mountain pass through the Balkan Mountains in Bulgaria. The pass is part of the Bulgarka Nature Park, and connects Gabrovo and Kazanlak. The Shipka Memorial sits on Stoletov Peak, to honour those who died for the Liberation of Bulgaria during the Battles of Shipka Pass.
